The Easy and Fun Way to Teach Chemistry
Teaching Boring Chemistry. Just Got Harder.
Have you ever wanted to show a student chemistry?
But in a fun way?
Just grab a student by the hand. Transport them deep into an atom. Then say, "See? This is the electron we are describing with quantum numbers. It is 4th from the lowest energy level, in the p subshell, oriented in the x axis and...Yup...has a minus 1/2 spin."
Or wanted to dive into a solution with student and say, "Look! That's what we mean when a precipitate is forming. It's not the first powder not going into solution. It's the result of a double displacement reaction where one of the products is insoluble."
When working with unprepared chemistry students, I wanted so badly to be Mrs. Frizzle and show them what was happening when my chemistry explanations weren't enough. They needed to see how chemistry could be fun and practical.
But, I wasn't Mrs. Frizzle and I couldn't show them.
Or could I?
That's when I began drawing and color coding everything in chemistry. If I couldn't take students into the atom, I was going to bring the atom to them. In full color fun.
I started teaching balancing chemical equations by drawing it out, color coding it, and making it fun. The students loved it and instantly got it without a million follow up questions like, "Why are we doing this?" and "Can't I just put a little 2 instead of a big 2?".
I've been color coding and illustrating chemistry ever since that moment.
Now, you can use all these color coding tips and worksheets to have more fun with your chemistry students.
